How to unclog a bathtub

Bathtubs can be so comfortable and relaxing. Many home owners’ bathtubs can be quite a headache. The headache is as a result of the clogging that normally occur in the drain. But it is not a problem that cannot be taken care of. The fact that it is relaxing, bathtubs still have to be in your home. Bathtubs tend to get clogs often. The clogs can be very stressing and annoying such that the thoughts of bathing can be unpleasant .
The clogs make the whole comfort disappear since the drain is blocked. When bathing the water does not pass through the drains, they accumulate making it uncomfortable and definitely unhappy experience. But with all said, do not let clogs discourage you from setting up a bathtub in your house. It is very possible for one to get rid of the clogs by maintaining the bathtub.

Instead of wasting your money by hiring a plumber each time your bathtub clogs, do it yourself. The plumbers are not any different; they use the same tools that you will find easy to use. You are in a better position to remove the clogs and keep it clean often.

But just who is responsible for the clogs in the bathtub drain? You are the only person using the bathroom, the dirt, hair and other things that make the drain clog. One way to maintain your bathtub is avoiding hairs and other solid dirt into your bathtub. But if not possible, here is how you can unclog your bathtub.

Using a coat hunger

  • To unblock the drain, remove the cover to access the clog. It is highly impossible to unclog a bathtub with its drain cover. After pulling the cover take a look inside. Remove every hair, dirt and soap scum that is in the drain. If possible use a coat hanger to remove everything that you can reach in the drain.
  • Stretch out a coat hanger to have a hook at the end. Try to reach for the deepest clogs. You will collect a lot of hair and dirt that has clogged inside the drain. Remove as much hair and dirt as possible until the hook cannot pick anymore.
  • Put the hook aside and pour hot water inside the drain. The water should be reasonably hot so that it does not burn you. The hot water too might also damage the pipes in the drain. Use a kettle or an appropriate container that will pour water directly into the drain. This will avoid splashing the hot water around. Relax for 10-15 minutes after pouring the water in to the drain.
  • Take a ½ cup of vinegar and ½ cup of baking soda and mix in a bowl. Pour the mixture into the drain as fast as possible before the fizzing halts. Allow the mixture in the drain to settle for about an hour or so. The mixture ensures the breakage of clogs inside the drain. It is therefore required that you allow the mixture to stay inside the drain before you begin using a plunger.
Turn on the hot water tap and fill the tub. The hot water should be enough to cover the clog in the bathtub. Use a plunger and direct it to the drain. Pull the plunger several times and make sure the drain is clear of any clogs. The hot water makes the process simpler as it passes through the drain. Besides using a plunger to unclog your bathtub, a snake serves the same purpose as well.

Get a snake that can go in the drain up to 25 feet down. At least you will be able to get the deepest clogs inside the drain. Twist it anticlockwise until you feel some resistance on your side. Do not force it deep down. Twist and collect the dirt, hairs and anything that has led to the clogs. Afterwards pour down hot water to melt down all the clogs still inside the drain.

The process is as simple as possible. One may also consider using a shop vacuum. The process can be very messy if not careful. Remove the drain cover and put the hose on the drain then turn on the shop vacuum. All the clogs will be drawn into the shop vacuum. Drain cleaners are also very good at unclogging a bathtub. If you consider buying a drain cleaner ensure you are able to handle it.

There are different types of drain cleaners, get the right chemical that will effectively get rid of all the clogs. Some drain cleaners can corrode pipes and bring a lot of damage. If you are too reluctant to try out these methods, call a plumber.

With the several methods to unclog your bathtub, nothing will stop you from owning one. You can still enjoy using your bathtub at the same time maintaining it. Bathtub clogs will never be a pain in your neck.
